Ah, Winter. That magical time of year, full of mulled wine and spiced cider; of chilly evenings and hot chocolates, the smell of bonfires and roasting chestnuts filling the air. It’s a time of the year loved by many, but unfortunately, it’s is not everyone’s ideal season. Whilst some of us revel in the drop of temperature and enjoy wrapping up in cozy knitwear, stoking the fire and tucking in to hot stodgy comfort food — others find it less favorable. People who suffer from S.A.D (Seasonal Adjustment Disorder) in particular or simply those who prefer warmer climates begin to consider setting off to escape the winter. With the rise in remote work making this a much more plausible plan, we take a look at some of the best destinations to escape the chill of winter.

Belize
Belize is one of the best places in the world to escape Winter as it has a pleasant tropical climate all year round. In particular though, the best time of year to visit Belize is during the dry season which runs from November until April. If you’re looking for the ultimate island paradise which will make you forget all about Winter, then head to the secluded island of Ambergris Caye in Belize. There, you can enjoy pristine white beaches, crystal clear water, and blue skies every day. Unwind and enjoy the relaxed Caribbean vibes and sunshine that will soothe your soul.
Thailand
Thailand has been a long-running favorite with those looking to escape the chilly weather of home, but also is hugely popular with location independent workers. Whilst the islands are the place to go to enjoy the sunshine, Chiang Mai up in the North is the hub of remote work. So, it largely depends whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape, or to get some work done, as on the smaller more remote islands, the WI-FI is likely to be much more hit and miss than the mainland. There are larger islands such as Koh Samui, that have more amenities and could be the best of both worlds.
Australia
Obviously Australia has its own Winter period, but that runs in parallel to many other places in the world. The three hottest months of Australia’s summer are December, January, and February. Whilst the cost of living in Australia is certainly higher than others on this list, it is also more developed, and perhaps best for those that love the city life or being in fairly close proximity to a major city. Australia of course is varied in terrain, and so you can still head to the beach or up to the mountains if you wish.
Sri Lanka
While the North of Sri Lanka tends to be rainy in December, the South enjoys a much more temperate climate this time of year. Sri Lanka makes a perfect Winter escape due to it’s beautiful beaches, relaxed vibes, and delectable cuisine to name but a few factors. If you’re a fan of watersports, then this is also something that Sri Lanka has to offer that may tempt you to pay a visit. The extremely low cost of living makes your money stretch further, which draws in many people looking to escape Winter on a budget.
Mauritius
With lush greenery and impossibly blue waters, Mauritius is strikingly beautiful from the get go. Despite the fact that it’s actually Winter in Mauritius too, you can still enjoy wonderful weather and expect temperatures of around 20-30°C throughout the day and night. An added bonus is that it will be off peak season in Mauritius, which makes it the perfect place to escape both Winter and the crowds of tourists. It’s a less obvious choice than the likes of Belize and Thailand, but if you prefer to discover unique places, then Mauritius could be perfect for you!
Don’t be sad this Winter season, escape the cold and enjoy your own slice fo paradise in Ambergris Caye, Belize.
